Many parents strive for well-mannered children. If your kiddo is delayed in speech, we encourage you to consider teaching specific names of items vs. pushing for please or thank you right away. However, once your kiddo has functional communication (in whatever form it may be), there is no harm in working towards behavior that increases the likelihood of them getting their needs met. Culturally, we appreciate manners and are more likely to give kiddos things they ask for when they use those manners. Here is an article that outlines how to begin the process of teaching them- to it I would add this: Model the use of manner by using them yourself with your kiddos and others.
